I’ve written about a beautification project I am working on. One of the areas I will be remodeling is the rooftop pool deck. To make it more of an amenity and cultivate spa-like experience, the client suggested incorporating an outdoor shower.

It’s a great idea to create a luxurious feel of a retreat! A poolside shower to rinse off chlorine after a swim in a setting that is open to the landscape gives the place a laid-back bohemian vibe. Fun for kids and adults alike. It definitely has a stylish touch; an outdoor shower is a convenience with a vibe of a care-free stay at a hotel.

Now I have to design it while keeping in mind that the pool deck is on top of a seven-story building.

In a rooftop pool deck setting, privacy is not that much of an issue. Provided that only swimsuit-clad people will use it. Yet, it has to be in a designated, off the beaten path semi-enclosed pocket near an existing drain. Speaking of choosing an appropriate location, both water drainage and water supply are major considerations. Avoiding leaks and controlling water run-off is critical. A sunny spot will help keep mold and mildew at bay.

An outdoor shower sets the tone for relaxation — an exotic summer vacation on your own rooftop.

I need to plan for a minimal enclosure, think of the flooring underfoot, and select the actual fixture. The showerhead should be durable stainless steel. Grohe fittings will work nicely. For paint colors and cladding materials, I can take inspiration from the views of the hills beyond.

Our open-to-the-sky before-and-after swimming rinse-off corner can have a shower pan concealed under slatted floor cedar boards. On the other hand, if we end-up re-tiling the entire rooftop pool deck, that might not be necessary. Of course, the tile should be slip-resistant. Another important consideration is the up-keep of this handy post sun-tanning wash-down area located on the rooftop. Our pool deck outdoor shower can’t be neglected and should be cleaned on a regular basis.

Hmm… Just had another idea. I wonder if my clients will consider building an outdoor kitchen here as well. That would be amazing!
